Conservative and heavily outspoken news anchor and critic of not only American immigration policy but even the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s presidency , Lou Dobbs announced very late last year that that he was to resign from his position as news anchor and opinion journalist for major U.S news channel CNN.
An anchor on the channel since its birth in the 1980s, Dobbs has been a consistently controversial figure in American news media. His outspoken views on immigration have led to him being branded racist, white supremacist , and a “one – trick pony” from detractors who believe that his continuing focus on immigration as a hot-button topic , even through the global economic downturn led to his star fading somewhat and therefore leading to Dobbs’ tenure at CNN ending.
None of Lou Dobbs’ plans have become public as of yet following his departure from the channel he has broadcast his notorious views from for over 20 years , but a plethora of speculators have placed their bets on the controversial figure’s next move. Most believe he will simply jump ship to FOX News, famously more receptive to the partisan opinion journalism that Dobbs specialises in than CNN, and front a similar show to the one he did on CNN , “Lou Dobbs Tonight”. CNN have had problems with Dobbs’ style of reporting and discourse for years, his recent focus on the “birther” controversy surrounding the legitimacy of the presidency of Barack Obama leading to words being had between Dobbs and CNN boss Jon Klein. Dobbs was allegedly told to tone down his railings against illegal immigrants in an effort to preserve the “middle-of-the-road” outlook that has brought CNN lower prime-time ratings than its more partisan , outspoken rivals but also a level of journalistic credibility for its approach.
With his age ruling him out as a realistic candidate to run for office in 2012, it seems that wherever Dobbs chooses to use as a platform for his views, he will serve as a useful lightning rod for conservative American views.
